An eternity later: Sponge fossils may be earliest animal on Earth | Daily Sabah

Image
A geologist in Canada may have just discovered traces of the earliest known animal life on Earth in the northwestern region of the country, giving a glimpse of the humble dawn of life that occurred hundreds of millions of years ago, a report published Wednesday in the journal Nature said. Around a billion years ago, a region of northwest Canada now defined by steep mountains was a prehistoric marine environment where the remains of ancient sponges may be preserved in mineral sediment, the paper says. Geologist Elizabeth Turner discovered the rocks in a remote region of the Northwest Territories accessible only by helicopter, where she has been excavating since the 1980s. Thin sections of rock contain three-dimensional structures that resemble modern sponge skeletons. "I believe these are ancient sponges – only this type of organism has this type of network of organic filaments," said Joachim Reitner, a geobiologist and expert in sponges at Germany's University of G

Data-driven iteration helped China’s Genki Forest become a $6B beverage giant in 5 years.

Image
Many Extra Crunch readers will not have heard of China’s fastest-growing bottled beverage company: Genki Forest is a direct-to-consumer startup that started selling its sodas, milk teas and other products just five years ago. Today, its products are available in 40 countries and the company hopes to earn $1.2 billion in 2021. After closing its latest funding round, Genki Forest is valued at $6 billion. Industry watchers frequently compare the upstart to giants like PepsiCo and Coca-Cola, but founder Binsen Tang comes from a tech background, having funded ELEX Technology, a social gaming company that found success internationally. “China doesn’t need any more good platforms,” Tang told his team in 2015, “but it does need good products.” Leveraging China’s robust distribution network, lighting-fast manufacturing capabilities and a vast pool of data that enables holistic digitization, Genki Forest sells more than 30% of its products online. “Everything feels right about th

Cannes Film Festival: Titane wins top Palme d'Or prize

Image
Director Julia Ducournau thanked the jury for "letting the monsters in" after her win Titane - an outlandish film packed full of sex and violence - has won the top award at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. Director Julie Ducournau is only the second woman to receive the Palme d'Or and the first female to win it alone. The film, which is Ducournau's second feature, tells the story of a young female killer who has sex with cars after surviving a childhood crash. The award was prematurely revealed by US director Spike Lee at the beginning of Saturday's ceremony. The jury president let the big secret slip, before telling the audience: "I apologise for messing up." Ms Ducournau was still emotional when her film was officially announced as the winner, adding: "This evening has been perfect because it's been imperfect." Titane had split critical opinion and has been described as one of the most shocking ever shown at the festival. #f

"We need to wait": WHO urges caution against mix-and-match vaccines | New

Image
s The World Health Organization (WHO) is now advising against mixing two different vaccines. Chief Scientist Dr. Soumya Swaminathan said decisions to allow potential mixing of vaccines are being driven by a lack of data. “It’s a little bit of a dangerous trend where people are in a data-free, evidence-free zone.” She went on to say that there’s a possibility that it will turn out to be a good approach, but because of the lack of data and science behind it, it’s too soon to say for certain. “There are studies going on; we need to wait for that.” The National Advisory Committee on Immunization, which certain Canadian health jurisdictions rely on for guidance in regards their vaccine strategies, has approved mix-and-match vaccinations in certain conditions. Dr. Swaminathan also reiterated her point on Twitter after the briefing. Another topic that was discussed was COVID-19 vaccine digital certification. This would be another way for health officials to track vaccinations.

South Africa Zuma riots: Death toll mounts amid looting

Image
The security forces have been unable to stop the looting At least 30 people have died in the violence which has been engulfing parts of South Africa since the country's former President… The death toll in South Africa has risen to 72 as violence continues across the country following the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma. Crowds looting and setting alight shopping centers clashed with police in several cities on Tuesday. The BBC filmed a baby being thrown from a building in Durban that was on fire after ground-floor shops were looted. A day earlier, 10 people were killed in a stampede during looting at a shopping center in Soweto. The military has been deployed to help police overstretched since the unrest began last week. South African police said in a statement they had identified 12 people suspected of provoking the riots, and that a total of 1,234 people had been arrested. President Cyril Ramaphosa has called it some of the worst violence witnessed in South

Kenyatta, Ruto and Odinga: The true cost of Kenya's political love triangle

Amazon Prime Day has been cancelled in Canada this year | New

Image
s Canadians are not getting an Amazon Prime Day this year. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to Daily Hive that the company has cancelled the 2021 iteration of Prime Day in Canada. “Due to the impact of COVID-19, we have decided to not move forward with Prime Day in Canada this year while we focus on the health and safety of our employees, customers and selling partners,” the spokesperson said. Amazon previously announced that the annual two-day sale would be postponed in Canada. Three of Amazon’s Ontario-based fulfillment centres were ordered to partially close in May after several workers tested positive for COVID-19. In March, Ontario’s Ministry of Labour opened investigations into five Toronto-area Amazon warehouses due to COVID-19 and other workplace safety-related concerns. Usually held in July, 2020’s Amazon Prime Day was delayed until October due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Daily Hive has reached out to Amazon and will update this story accordingly. #amazonprime #

Ottawa sees slight uptick in daily cases Sunday

Image
OTTAWA -- Ottawa Public Health is reporting seven more people in Ottawa have tested positive for COVID-19, a slight uptick over previous reports in the past week. OPH reported five new cases on Saturday, following three days of net zero case increases and one day where the total decreased by one. The new cases Sunday bring Ottawa's pandemic total to 27,741 laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began. No new deaths were reported on Sunday. The pandemic has claimed the lives of 593 residents of Ottawa. Across Ontario, officials reported another 177 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday and said six more Ontarians have died due to the virus. The number of resolved cases was lower than the number of new cases, with 166 newly resolved infections, meaning the active case count in the province went up slightly. Public Health Ontario added five cases to its total for Ottawa on Sunday. Figures from OPH often differ from Public Health Ontario's because the two healt

Biden looks to promote his plan to reduce gun violence, as he focuses on embattled pieces of his agenda.

Image
The Senate returned to Washington on Monday after a two-week recess facing a pile of complicated legislative work and key deadlines looming in the push to enact President Biden’s far-reaching economic agenda. Democratic leaders have mapped out a monthlong sprint for senators, warning them to prepare for late nights, weekend work and even the cancellation of part of their beloved August recess to set up final passage of their priorities in the fall. The House does not return until next week, but will face a similar time crunch when it does. Their goal is to simultaneously advance two hulking bills before the summer break: a bipartisan investment in roads, bridges, high-speed internet and other infrastructure projects; and a far larger and more partisan package that would include tax increases on corporations and the rich to fund an expansion of the social safety net and programs to fight climate change. If successful, the July sprint would set up Congress to pass both bills into l

"Wobbling moon" could cause devastating floods: NASA | New

s “The combination of the Moon’s gravitational pull, rising sea levels, and climate change will continue to exacerbate coastal flooding on our coastlines and across the world. NASA’s Sea Level Change Team is providing crucial information so that we can plan, protect, and prevent damage to the environment and people’s livelihoods affected by flooding,” said NASA administrator Bill Nelson. While the study looks specifically at American coastal cities, if the heat dome was any indication, Canada may experience something similar. The Canadian Space Agency tells Daily Hive that they’re consulting with government agencies on the topic. The study will be an important resource for coastal city planners to mitigate the impacts on businesses and neighborhoods. As if Earth didn’t have enough to worry about, with climate change, heatwaves, wildfires, and generally extreme weather plaguing many parts of the planet, now the moon has decided to remind everyone… #climatechange #climate #team #

Voters Chose Boring Over Bombast

Image
They Got Biden’s Penchant for Pontificating. Michael Shear The president’s remarks on Wednesday, delivered to a friendly and respectful crowd of supporters at McHenry County College in this Chicago suburb, even included “reconciliation,” which Mr. Biden quickly admitted was a “fancy” Washington word. As the president travels the country pitching his plan for spending trillions of dollars to reshape the American economy, he is facing a rhetorical reality that has long plagued many of his predecessors: There is a vast difference between explaining and inspiring, and Mr. Biden — who was recently called the “explainer in chief” by his press secretary — often struggles to reach the potential oratorical heights of the office he holds. Mr. Biden’s ambitions are vast and the substance of his presidency has been dramatic at times: an end to the nation’s longest war, a historic focus on equity and spending proposals bigger than anything before. He sometimes describes his agenda as a way

Democrats Roll Out $3.5 Trillion Budget to Fulfill Expansive Agenda

Image
Senator Kyrsten Sinema, Democrat of Arizona and another key moderate, also hung back on Wednesday, when her office said she would decide whether to support the proposal based on what was included. President Biden and congressional Democrats vowed on Wednesday to push through a $3.5 trillion budget blueprint to vastly expand social and environmental programs by extending the reach of education and health care, taxing the rich and tackling the warming of the planet. The legislation is far from passage, but top Democrats have agreed on working to include several far-reaching details. They include universal prekindergarten for all 3- and 4-year-olds, two years of free community college, clean energy requirements for utilities and lower prescription drug prices. Medicare benefits would be expanded, and green cards would be extended to some undocumented immigrants. At a closed-door luncheon in the Capitol, Mr. Biden rallied Democrats and the independents aligned with them to embrace t

The TechCrunch Top 3

Image
Today’s Top 3 are all about social networks. Yes, the massive companies that we share our lives with, day in and day out. Let’s start with Facebook. Facebook, like Amazon, is not thrilled with the new U.S. antitrust boss: Lina Khan’s appointment as the head of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is causing waves among the largest tech companies in the world. Amazon demanded that she recuse herself from regulating its business. Facebook is now making similar noises. In short, the tech giants think that her prior criticism of their business practices is disqualifying. This is at once risible and notable; that a regulator has a perspective about, well, regulation seems more like a qualification than a disqualifying fact. Facebook is also willing to buy creator love: Sticking to the Facebook world for a moment, the company announced a $1 billion fund that will be paid out to digital creators who produce work that lives on its platforms. The dollar amount is what we should pay a

Gen Z, millennials playing a significant part in the Great Resignation trend - NEWS 1130

Image
As the COVID-19 pandemic dragged on over the past 16 months, Vanessa Staniforth experienced both burnout and career stagnation in her job. “I started to feel stuck,” said the 30-year-old Ottawa-based software developer. “There weren’t many opportunities to step out of daily work to expand skills. I had to commit to learning new skills outside of work to satisfy that desire and gain the confidence to even apply for other positions.” Staniforth, who left her job in April to start a career in a new industry, says she believes the pandemic gave many people a chance to reflect on their work life. “People are asking themselves: ‘Is this really where I want to be? Is this the right direction for me?'” she said. Her experience is part of a phenomenon being dubbed the Great Resignation, a wave of workers in Canada and the U.S. who are leaving their jobs, and younger Canadians are contributing to the trend.

Space News: NASA's Curiosity Rover finds patches of rock record erased, revealing clue

Image
s A self-portrait of NASA's Curiosity rover taken on June 15, 2018, during the 2,082nd Martian day, or sol, of Curiosity's work on Mars. Today, Mars is a planet of extremes — it's bitterly cold, has high radiation, and is bone-dry. But billions of years ago, Mars was home to lake systems that could have sustained microbial life. As the planet's climate changed, one such lake — in Mars' Gale Crater — slowly dried out. Scientists have new evidence that super salty water, or brines, seeped deep through the cracks, between grains of soil in the parched lake bottom and altered the clay mineral-rich layers beneath. The findings published in the July 9 edition of the journal Science and led by the team in charge of the Chemistry and Mineralogy, or CheMin, instrument — aboard NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover — help add to the understanding of where the rock record preserved or destroyed evidence of Mars' past and possible signs of ancient life
