Saskatchewan to stop releasing daily COVID-19 update

Image
s Saskatchewan says it will soon stop providing daily COVID-19 updates as the virus "moves from pandemic to endemic." That decision means there will no longer be a daily recap issued by the province on how many new cases or deaths were recorded or how many vaccines were administered. Instead, the province will move to a weekly recap as of Aug. 3. Saskatchewan's dashboard of COVID-19 data will still be updated on a daily basis, the province said. The news comes as the number of active COVID-19 cases reached a level not seen since the province dropped all public restrictions on July 11. As of Thursday the number of active cases in the province stood at 412. On July 10, the number of active cases was 413. The increase in active case numbers was caused by 52 new cases reported on Thursday. The new cases are located in the following health zones; Far northwest: nine. Far north central: two. Far northeast: three. Northwest: six. North central: four. Nor...

An eternity later: Sponge fossils may be earliest animal on Earth | Daily Sabah

Image
A geologist in Canada may have just discovered traces of the earliest known animal life on Earth in the northwestern region of the country, giving a glimpse of the humble dawn of life that occurred hundreds of millions of years ago, a report published Wednesday in the journal Nature said. Around a billion years ago, a region of northwest Canada now defined by steep mountains was a prehistoric marine environment where the remains of ancient sponges may be preserved in mineral sediment, the paper says. Geologist Elizabeth Turner discovered the rocks in a remote region of the Northwest Territories accessible only by helicopter, where she has been excavating since the 1980s. Thin sections of rock contain three-dimensional structures that resemble modern sponge skeletons. "I believe these are ancient sponges – only this type of organism has this type of network of organic filaments," said Joachim Reitner, a geobiologist and expert in sponges at Germany's University of G...

Amazon Prime Day has been cancelled in Canada this year | New

Image
s Canadians are not getting an Amazon Prime Day this year. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to Daily Hive that the company has cancelled the 2021 iteration of Prime Day in Canada. “Due to the impact of COVID-19, we have decided to not move forward with Prime Day in Canada this year while we focus on the health and safety of our employees, customers and selling partners,” the spokesperson said. Amazon previously announced that the annual two-day sale would be postponed in Canada. Three of Amazon’s Ontario-based fulfillment centres were ordered to partially close in May after several workers tested positive for COVID-19. In March, Ontario’s Ministry of Labour opened investigations into five Toronto-area Amazon warehouses due to COVID-19 and other workplace safety-related concerns. Usually held in July, 2020’s Amazon Prime Day was delayed until October due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Daily Hive has reached out to Amazon and will update this story accordingly. #amazonprime #...

Ottawa sees slight uptick in daily cases Sunday

Image
OTTAWA -- Ottawa Public Health is reporting seven more people in Ottawa have tested positive for COVID-19, a slight uptick over previous reports in the past week. OPH reported five new cases on Saturday, following three days of net zero case increases and one day where the total decreased by one. The new cases Sunday bring Ottawa's pandemic total to 27,741 laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began. No new deaths were reported on Sunday. The pandemic has claimed the lives of 593 residents of Ottawa. Across Ontario, officials reported another 177 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday and said six more Ontarians have died due to the virus. The number of resolved cases was lower than the number of new cases, with 166 newly resolved infections, meaning the active case count in the province went up slightly. Public Health Ontario added five cases to its total for Ottawa on Sunday. Figures from OPH often differ from Public Health Ontario's because the two healt...

Ottawa sees single-digit increase in new COVID-19 case

Image
s Ottawa Public Health is reporting eight new COVID-19 cases in the city on Tuesday, reflecting a low not seen in the pandemic since August 2020. The number of active COVID-19 cases in the city also dropped to 172 and no new deaths related to the virus were reported in the past 24 hours. Tuesday tends to be the lowest day of the week for new COVID-19 case reports, and local health officials have cautioned that low testing volumes could be underestimating the actual levels of the virus in the community. #case #citylife #ottawa #number #drop #canada #wellbeing #report #publichealth #public #reporting

75% of Toronto adults now have one COVID-19 vaccine dose, 25% fully immunized | New

Image
s More one quarter of adults in Toronto are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The City of Toronto announced on June 19 that more than 75% of adults have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and over 25% have had two doses. The milestone marks “important progress,” the City said, as it works to immunize as many residents as possible to fight both the initial strain of COVID-19 and the Delta variant. Last month, federal health officials said that once 75% of eligible Canadians get their first dose and 20% have their second shot, some restrictions can be lifted. People will be able to go camping and hiking, have picnics, enjoy time on patios, and have small, outdoor gatherings with family and friends, officials said. However, crowds should still be avoided and public health measures must still be followed, #vaccine #ontario #city #toronto #canada #news

s Ottawa Public Health says 10 more people in Ottawa have tested positive for COVID-19, the lowest daily case count reported in the capital since Sept. 1, 2020. No new deaths were reported for the third day in a row, Tuesday. Across the province, health officials confirmed 296 new cases of the virus, the lowest daily report since Sept. 17, 2020. Another 645 cases across Ontario are now considered resolved. Public Health Ontario says 15 more Ontarians have died from COVID-19. Public Health Ontario added 11 new cases to its total for Ottawa on Tuesday. Figures from OPH often differ from those provided by Public Health Ontario because the two health agencies pull data for their daily reports at different times of the day. Only one other case of COVID-19 was reported elsewhere in the region. A single case was added to the total for the Leeds, Grenville & Lanark District Health Unit on Tuesday. Ottawa Public Health's COVID-19 dashboard says there have been 27,459 total labora...
